Days Out on Holiday in Bude | Visit the Largest Castle in the South West

If you are renting a self-catering holiday cottage in Bude and looking for holiday activities or days out in Bude, why not visit Okehampton Castle – possibly the largest Castle ruins in the South West!

Okehampton Castle was mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday Book, as the centre of the Sheriff of Devon’s estate. Situated on a long thin shale outcrop within a picturesque wooded valley on the Northern edge of Dartmoor.

The castle started out as a motte-and-bailey and later gained a stone keep. A further building was added during the 14th century and additional buildings along the ridge. We understand the castle was abandoned in 1539 when Henry, Marquis of Exeter was executed by Henry VIII.

Okehampton Castle offers fascinating remains which are truly inspiring. You really can conjure up images of brave knights, damsels in distress and royal banquets.

Find lots more information about Okehampton Castle, maps & photos on this website: click here and the opening times & admission costs from English heritage: click here.

Okehampton Castle is an easy drive from Bude, approx. 45 miles heading inland towards Exeter. The driving time is approx. 35/40 minutes on good roads. Why not tie in a walk on Dartmoor and enjoy some of the breath-taking scenery and granite tors.

Another fun day out for your holiday in Bude, bought to you by Hilton Farm Holiday Cottages in Bude, North Cornwall.
